Grant Writing Workshop in San Antonio, TX November 5-6, 2009

Mosaic and Grant Writing USA will present a two-day grant writing workshop in San Antonio, November 5-6, 2009.

Beginning and experienced grant writers from city, county and state agencies as well as nonprofits, K-12, colleges and universities are encouraged to attend.Purchase orders, checks and cards are welcome. Multi-enrollment discounts are available. Tuition payment is not required at the time of enrollment.

Tuition is $425 and includes all materials: workbook and accompanying 420MB resource CD that's packed full of tools and more than 200 sample grant proposals. Seating is limited, online reservations are necessary.

Free Tickets to the Second Annual Summer Festival of Music and the Arts

SAN ANTONIO, Texas- Dreams Fulfilled Through Music is giving away free tickets, available today online, for tomorrow's performance featuring student musicians with special needs. Instruments played include, piano, an accordion ensemble, and chimes. Vocal solos and instruments will perform selections from “The Sound of Music,” and composers, Elizabeth Gutierrez and Nancy Faber. The program will be interpreted in sign language by San Antonio Independent Living Services.

“The musicians discover talents by playing their instruments,” said Archuleta. “By playing a musical instrument, people are able to express themselves creatively, and communicate when so often their voices are not heard,” said Archuleta. “The music speaks for them. People with developmental disabilities desire to be involved in their communities by being neighbors, co-workers, and friends, who share their talents,” said Mary Kathryn Archuleta co-founder and executive and artistic director, Dreams Fulfilled Through Music. “Our communities are strengthened by their gifts.”

Fighting the record breaking heat, Mosaic in South Central Texas joined forces with Texas Lutheran University, TLU, and Siempre Sustainable Systems to participated in a huge community service project that benefited individuals with developmental disabilities last Tuesday and Thursday.

Mosaic and students from Lone Star Scholars Academy, LSSA, through TLU spent two evenings at Wal-Mart and HEB in Seguin providing information about the services and programs available to families and individuals who have developmental disabilities.The advocacy was one of five projects that approximately 50 students of LSSA participated in for their community service project. The students, Mosaic individuals, and other volunteers created a sensory room in the day habiliation center in Seguin. Together, they completed communication books and built a raised bed garden and a basketball court that is easily accessible to Mosaic's individuals.

Chris Bollinger, who has a doctorate in Communication Studies and is the academic director for LSSA said that TLU picked Mosaic for their annual community project because, “Mosaic works with a vital and talented group of people in our community who are often forgotten or ignored. Working with Mosaic allows our students an opportunity to work alongside and learn from people who bring a little different perspective than they are accustomed to having. This project is a great way for our students to build relationships with others and learn about themselves while making a positive contribution to our larger, shared community.”

Mosaic's individuals were very excited to see the new additions to the day habilitation center and cannot wait to spend some time outdoors gardening and playing basketball. Mosaic was thrilled to have had this opportunity to have people in the Seguin community involved with the Mosaic agency. Now that's what I call community!

Transitional Rate Adjustment CSSB 1 Section 48

long story short, the State is wanting to reduce the Interest/Waiting lists to receive services (which is great!) part of the proposal is requesting the HCS Case Management functions be transferred from the HCS providers to the local Mental Retardation Authorities (MRA such as Dallas Metrocare, Denton County MHMR, LifePath Systems, etc). there is talk that all the Case Management funding will be pulled from the HCS providers (such as Mosaic) and given to the MRA's as a result. the loss of funding will be detrimental and many providers will not be able to continue to provide services if this happens.

i need you to call or fax your Representative in Austin NO LATER than tomorrow. please ask your Rep to:

1.) support the Transitional Rate Adjustment in the state budget for 2010 and 2011 (CSSB 1 Section 48)
2.) explain that when the Case Manager functions transfer to the Mental Retardation Authority (MRA), the MRA Case Managers will only provide oversight to plans of care and ensure people are provided the services they need
3.) explain that the HCS provider (such as Mosaic) will be responsible for coordinating day-to-day services for people receiving supports and ensuring implementation of that plan of care
4.) explain both functions are very important AND both require adequate funding
5.) ask to please invest $24 million dollars to stabilize the HCS Provider system over the next two years to ensure
providers have enough funding to meet the needs of some of our most vulnerable citizens.
